Draupadi was never the reason for the war. Pandavas were happily willing to forget her humiliation if Duryodhan returned the kingdom. They were even willing to settle for five villages to avoid war. If Draupadi was that important to Pandavas they wouldn't let her be humiliated at all

So Draupadi was never the cause or trigger or reason for war.

So who was the actual cause and how. In my opinion it was 3 people whose choices decided the war….

Yudhishthir - His wish to become emperor.

Yudhishthir was king of beautiful and prosperous Indraprasth. He had beautiful wife, amazing brothers and an awesome son who would inherit the throne after him. He had peace and prosperity. His citizens loved him, everyone respected him. Yet it was not enough for him. He then desired to be emperor. He wanted to have all the kings of the continent under his sway. And he assumed everyone will happily agree to it. Duryodhan was his equal till rajasuya and he was at peace with it. Yudhishthir had to become an emperor and rub it in his wounds and stoke his jealousy and provoke a competition that had ended already. His greed to be emperor made him a pauper.

Karna - Duryodhan completely trusted Karina's ability to defeat the strongest Pandava Arjun

Karna was an arrogant over confident fool who thought he could defeat Arjun, but every battle Karna and Arjun had, it either ended in karna walking away in between or getting defeated or battle abandoned. He thought his divine kavach or divine bow vijaya or divine brahma weapon received from Parshuram or shakti from Indra would be enough to defeat Arjun - he forgot that the biggest and best divyastr is intelligence and biggest and best armor is karma..Karna’s weapons were no match for Krishna's intelligence and karna's bad deeds in the form of his curses became Arjun's armor.

If Duryodhan had realised himself of if Karna hand honestly told him that he will not be able to defeat Arjun, Duryodhan would have settled for peace

Krishna - he could have stopped the war if he wanted to.

Pandavas wanted peace and were willing to accept whatever krishna asked them to do. Pandavas with five villages and as vassals of duryodhan who would be emperor was what exactly Duryodhan wanted. But Krishna during his peace mission uses a very condescending and threatening tone and says agree to peace or Arjun and Bhima will slaughter you with your brothers. Duryodhan believed Karna will defeat Arjun and he can beat Bhima and krishna already had promised not to fight so Duryodhan confidently said bring on the war
