Union Territories are a administrative areas I India which are in direct rule of the central government.

Generally, each union territory has a lieutenant-governor or administrator appointed over by the Indian President.

Union territories were formed at the time of independence and thereafter as these administrative areas were too small and financially and economically weak to b categorized as a state and were heavily reliant on the central government.
