because of the fact that the colours of white light have different speed and they refract by different angles and different colors reach our eyes. Thus dispersion takes place.

Ex.1: When White light passes through glass, it encounters two interfaces; one while entering and one while leaving. (interface: change in medium)
It slows down at first interface and speeds back up at second
Ex.2: Dispersion of light while passing through a prism occurs due to refraction of light waves at different speeds in that refracting medium, causing dispersion of white light into it's constituent colours
