It is so because the leaves contains a green pigment in chloroplast called chlorophyll.
Intrestingly earlier when the earth was created all plants looked purple because of the purple pigment called retinal which used to capture sunlight before chlorophyll.Eventually plants developed chlorophyll which was better than retinal in absorbing sunlight.
