Surat was the emporium of western trade during the Mughal period due to the following reasons.
1. Surat being a port city was well suited geographically to connect with west Asia as lot of trade activities were carried out from Surat via Gulf of Ormuz.
2. It had a healthy Conglomeration of people from all across the world , the Dutch, the Portuguese and the English all having set up factories, turned it into a commercial hub.
3. The native cotton textiles of Surat had great market in Africa and Europe making it all the more important for trade activities.
4. Also the city dwellings provided great hospitality for the people , a unique feature back then.
However Surat began to decline towards the end of seventeenth century due to the following reasons.
1. With the disintegration of Mughal empire , there was a political instability thus several goods saw severe dip in productivity , ultimately catering to the loss of markets.
2. Also the control of sea routes by the Portuguese added misery to the woes of traders.
3. Lastly , Bombay proved too much for Surat to sustain the competition with British taking a stronghold .
Hope it will really helps uh
