There are many reasons for poverty in India:

Various socio-cultural factors like caste and gender discrimination and social exclusion contribute to the wider realm of poverty.

Small farmers borrow loans to buy agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, tools, pesticides etc. Since they hardly have any savings, they are unable to repay the loan and become caught in a vicious cycle of indebtedness.

The Indian government failed to promote economic growth and population control which perpetuated the cycle of poverty.

Policies of the colonilal government ruined traditional handicrafts and dicouraged development of industries such as textiles. The low growth rate continued until the late nineteen-eightees and resulted in lesser job opportunities and low growth rate incomes.
