Answer:

The biggest reason for social inequality is that during the later vedic period there were castes. These were based on the work and the money(or number of cows which was considered wealth). The castes were Brahmins (the sages), Kshatriyas (the kings), Vaishyas (The bankers, other administrators) and the Shudras(the peasants). This influenced all Indians to follow the caste system from old times. For example, women are still not allowed to do everything, they don't have complete freedom like men even during these days. So, I personally think that the caste system originating in the later vedic period slowly developed into other castes and the result is the inequality of today.
