The blood donation camp....
I was determined to be a part of this mega blood donation camp to be held on 15th August 2014. It was being organised by the youth wing of Lions Club. They were going to organise blood donation camps in every city and town all over India and try to make it to the Guineas world records.
There were advertisements inserted in newspapers, television and the social media was used to create a rage amongst the public. Facebook was flooded with likes and comments. Messages exchanged on WhatsApp.
My father was a member of the Lions Club. He was in charge of the committee formed to organise the camp in our city. I went with him when they went door to door convincing people of the importance of blood donation. There was lot of myths in the minds of the general public. The children’s wing organised a poster event regarding these myths. The posters were then put up in shopping malls and multiplexes for people to see and learn the uses of donating blood.
The day arrived. We dressed in colourful clothes and arrived at the venue. The chief guest of the occasion was the commander of the Bengal battalion based at Sukna. The mayor and many councillors of the city arrived. We raised the national flag and sang the national anthem. The event was announced open.
The beds were placed in a hall at the Lions Club hospital. Doctors and technicians had set up a mini hospice. People lined up for donating blood. Blood pressure and weight measured and recorded in a certificate. The person was taken to a bed and needle inserted. 300 units of blood was taken from each person. By the end of the day, at five pm, seven hundred and eighty six people had donated blood. Figures from all over India were coming on WhatsApp. Pictures of the camp were being posted on Facebook.
An event of great importance and usefulness was completed well. It was organised with precision and we were happy that it was put on record by the Guineas world records.
