The advent of British in India opened up economic and religious opportunities for the lower castes. The Christian missionaries started their work to convert lower castes and the latter flocked into the Christianity as they did not used to enjoy equal status in Hinduism. Secondly, they were also given monetary benefits by the Missionaries.

The missionaries set up modern schools for lower castes and thus equipped their children with some resources to earn their livelihood and live a better life. They also provide them some employment opportunities. Reformers also worked for the upliftment of lower castes by establishing schools and providing other opportunities to them. The lower castes were trusted by the British and were recruited in the army as well.
