The first landing of French troops occurred on the first French attack on Đà Nẵng in September 1858.

French ships attacked Da Nang

According to Oscar Chapuis, a group of 14 French gunships, 3,000 men and 300 Filipino troops commanded by French Admiral Charles Rigault de Genouily attacked the port of Da Nang. The attack was ordered by Napoleon III of France, on the grounds that the Vietnamese royal court had mistreated and massacared Catholics and missionaries in the country. However Genouily's troops had to leave after a few months due to illnesses.

Admiral de Genouily

The same troops later sailed south to Saigon, the largest Vietnamese settlement in the southern region, which was poorly defended. They captured the city on 18 Feb 1959.

The capture of Saigon

For the Da Nang's siege, the Vietnamese would later recaptured the city in 1860, forcing all French and Spanish troops to evacuate. However that victory would not change the end of the war. At the time of Da Nang's recapture, Saigon was falling into French control, militarily.
