The word slope has two geomorphic applications. Used in a general sense, “slope” refers to any geometric element of the earth's solid surface; the entire landscape is made up of slope elements and thus the science of geomorphology is largely concerned with the study of slopes. There is no genetic or locational connotation to the word “slope”; slopes may be subaerial, submarine (or by extension, lunar, etc.), and may be formed by any process. In a restricted sense, “slope” is often used to refer to the angle which any part of the earth's surface makes with a horizontal datum. Better terms for this angle include inclination, slope angle and slope gradient.
