Tsunamis are caused after the tectonic plates slide against each other and cause earthquake under the surface of sea.
It is because Japan is located on the coastline and is also an earthquake prone area.

the cause of tsunami is under water earth quakes which happen because of the movement in ocean floor also japan is an earth quake pron area.
