Explanation:

Recoil Velocity of the Gun=-0.4m/s

Velocity of the bullet=?

Mass of the bullet=0.02kg

Mass of the Gun=5kg

By conservation of Linear MOMENTUM of System

Initial MOMENTUM= FINAL MOMENTUM

0 =  - 0.4 \times 5 + 0.02 \times v \\  \\ 0.02v = 2 \\  \\ v =  \frac{2 }{0.02}  = 100 {ms}^{ - 1}

Hope this helps.

The velocity of the bullet is 100 m/s .

Given :

Velocity of rifle , v_r=0.4\ m/s \ .

Mass of rifle , m_r=5\ kg\ .

Mass of the bullet , m_b=20\ gm = 0.02\ kg \ .

We need to find the velocity of bullet . Let velocity be v_b .

Therefore, by conservation of momentum ( since no external force is exerting)

m_rv_r=m_bv_b\\\\5\times 0.4=0.02\times v_b\\\\v_b=\dfrac{0.02}{5\times  0.4}\\\\v_b=100\ m/s\ .

Hence , this is the required solution .
