India is today on the cusp of a significant economic change. It has so far been progressing at a decent clip, but the next decade is going to see the country nudging China in a big way for the top position among the fastest growing economies in the world.Economic progress is going to come through both industrial production as well as commensurate growth in the service sector. With higher disposable income, the household or domestic sector will see relatively better living standards than we are witnessing today. All this progress will stretch our current energy availability, as demand will increase by quantum leaps in the coming days.

All of the above can happen in a seamless manner and be sustained in the long run, if we are able to put in place better energy management systems. A lot of our electric power is lost due to transmission and distribution losses. This needs to be addressed immediately. Power theft by hooking or tapping must be made a non-bailable offence, just as production norms should be laid down and, for production losses, people should be made accountable. India is blessed with mighty rivers; hydroelectric power should be generated in a much bigger way. We must go in for nuclear power across regions now that members of the nuclear suppliers' group have agreed to give us the required fuel.
