The life of a girl child in 19th century India was very miserable. The birth of a girl child was considered as a source of misery and liability for family. She had to be depend on parents during her childhood and on her husband and son during her middle and late years respectively.

The girl was subjected to various abuses like female infanticide, child marriage, dowry, and sati. The widow-remarriage was banned and women were not allowed to have formal education. The girls were also denied property and other basic rights and needs in society.
