Given : A solid concrete porch consists of 3 steps and a landing. The steps have a tread of 0.30 m, a rise of 0.18 m, and a length of 2.00 m.

To Find : How much material was used in its  construction?

Solution:

Volume = Length x Tread * Rise

Step 1 - Rise/height = 0.18m

Volume  = 2 x 0.3 x 0.18 = 0.108  m³

Step 2  Rise / height will become 2 times = 0.18 + 0.18 = 0.36 m

Volume  = 2 x 0.3 x 0.36 = 0.216  m³

Step 3 : Rise / height will become 3 times = 0.18 + 0.18  + 0.18 = 0.54 m

Volume  = 2 x 0.3 x 0.54 = 0.324  m³

For landing step  Rise / height =   0.18 x 4 = 0.72 m

landing step Width is missing assuming  0.3 m  same as tread

Volume of Landing step = 2 x 0.3 x 0.72  = 0.432 m³

Total Volume =  0.108  + 0.216 +  0.324 + 0.432

= 1.08  m³

material   used in its  construction =  1.08  m³
