Question:-

what is rectilinear propagation of light ?

Answer:-

  • the property which shows that light travels in a straight lines in a medium is called rectilinear propagation of light.
  • a sharp Shadow of an object in sunlight is an evidence of rectilinear propagation of light.

we can verify the straight line propagation of light by doing the following activity :-

take a piece of plastic or rubber tube or a straw of about 30 cm in length point fix a lighted candle or any other source of light on a table in a dark room. Standing at the opposite corner of the room, look at the candle through the tube. Now, bend the tube a little . is the candle visible to you through the tube? you will not be able to see the candle or the source of light.

What do you conclude from this ?

=> this activity conclude that light travels in a straight line.

hence , this activity proves that light travels in a straight line.
