A beam of light when passed through a prism splits in to seven colours and deflects at varying angles due to Refraction. Red colour deflects the least and therefore it possess the longest wavelength , hence red light can travel a longer distance as compared to other colours and can be seen from farther distance. Therefore red light is used for signalling. It doesn't make sense if the room is darker or lightened up.
