A reaction in which both oxidation (loss of electron) and reduction (gain of electron) takes place is called redox reaction

EXAMPLE:

During electrolysis process the ions in the cell undergo redox reaction in which the negative terminal loses it electron at the positive electrode and the positive terminal gains electron at the negative electrode
