The lens (a) is a concave lens, which is diverging in nature. Thus, the ray of light bends away from the optical axis after refraction from the lens, and appears to diverge from the focus.

The lens (b) is a convex lens, which is converging in nature. Thus, the ray of light passes through focus after refraction and becomes parallel to the optical axis
