SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

Reduce the following rational numbers to their standard form:

 \displaystyle \sf{a) \:  \:  \:  \frac{ - 45}{90} }

 \displaystyle \sf{b) \:  \:  \:  \frac{26}{ - 39}  }

EVALUATION

ANSWER TO QUESTION (a)

Here the given rational number is

 \displaystyle \sf{ \frac{ - 45}{90} }

45 = 3 × 3 × 5

90 = 2 × 3 × 3 × 5

So common factor of the numerator and denominator is 45

So Dividing both of the numerator and denominator by 45 we get

 \displaystyle \sf{ \frac{ - 45}{90} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  -  \frac{ 45}{90} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  -  \frac{ 1}{2} }

ANSWER TO QUESTION (b)

Here the given number is

 \displaystyle \sf{  \frac{26}{ - 39} }

26 = 2 × 13

39 = 3 × 13

So common factor of the numerator and denominator is 13

So Dividing both of the numerator and denominator by 13 we get

 \displaystyle \sf{  \frac{26}{ - 39} }

 \displaystyle \sf{   =  - \frac{26}{  39} }

 \displaystyle \sf{   =  - \frac{2}{  3} }
