Question

Reema spends 1/2 of her money in a shop. Then she spends 1/3 of what is left on the bus fare. If she is finally left with 20 rupees, how much did she have in the beginning ?

Let the money she had in the beginning be x

She spends 1/2 of her money in shop

So she spends x/2 money

Money left = x-x/2

==> (2x-x ) / 2

==> x/2

She spends 1/3 of this money on bus fare.

So she spends x/2 * 1/3

==> x/6 of her money

Now money left = x/2-x/6

==>( 6x - 2x) / 12

==> 4x/12

==> x/3

Given she was left with Rs 20

So:

x/3 = Rs 20

==> x = Rs 20 * 3

==> x = Rs 60

Hence she had originally Rs 60
