A sentence is given, it is in active voice. And we're asked to change it to passive voice.

First of all, let's understand the concept of the question! The concept is based on "active and passive voices". What are they? A sentence is said to be in active voice, if its object be the receiver of the action whereas, in case of passive voice, the subject receives the action.

Now let's learn how to change a sentence from active voice to passive voice! To change it, first we've to identify the subject, verb and the object of the sentence. The subject and the object can be a pronoun too. Then, we should interchange the places of subject and object in the sentence. Next, we have to add the suitable auxiliary verb (by means of its tense) to the verb and change the verb to its past participle form. At last, insert the conjunction "by" before the subject. Once all these are done, the conversion is over! A note to remember: Don't change the tense while inserting the auxiliary verb.

Now, let's head towards the required answer!

Given sentence: Reena explained the rules.

  • Subject - Reena
  • Verb - explain (explained)
  • Object - the rules

Adding auxiliary verb and changing the verb to its past participle form

  • The auxiliary verbs we use use for past tense are was/were. Since the object of the given sentence is in plural form, we have to use "were".
  • The past participle form of explain is "explained".

Arranging the sentence

Passive voice: The rules were explained by Reena.
