Reena has pens and pencil which together are 40 in number. if she has 5 more pencil and 5 less pens than the number of pencil would become 4 times the number of pens find the original number of pens and pencils

let the no. of pens be x and no. of pens be y

acc. to the sum
x+y = 40 - (1)
y+5 = 4 ( x-5)
y+5 = 4x-20
4x-y =25 - (2)
add the equations 1 and 2

x= 13
y= 40 - x (from 1 )
y= 40 -13
y=27

original no. of
pencils equals 27 and pens equals 13
