the temperature of the room can effect the temperature shown in thermometer, it was dipped in that liquid to moderate the temperature of thermometer

The doctor after taking temperature of the patients dipped the termometre in a liquid as the mercury in the thermometer had reached the number of the patient's temp. So to bring back the mercury at normal temperature it is dipped in liquid
