The gas is (B) SO3 or Sulphur Trioxide.
When you heat hydrated Iron sulphate (FeSO4.7H2O).
Two reactions take place:
1) FeSO4.7H2O (heat)-------------> FeSO4 + 7H2O
2) 2FeSO4 (strong heating)-----------> Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3
=> When it is heated very strongly, then the second reaction takes place giving out both Sulphur Dioxide and Sulphur trioxide gases in small quantities.
=> Both these gases are strongly acidic and react with water as shown:
SO2 + H2O ---------> H2SO3 (Sulphurous acid)
SO3 + H2O ----------> H2SO4 (Sulphuric acid)
=> Thus, these gases turn moist blue litmus red.
Answer:
The green colour of ferrous sulphate crystals changes to brownish black ferric oxide and smell of burning Sulphur dioxide is observed.
