Ethene on treatment with bromine undergoes addition to form 1,2-Dibromoethane (ethylene dibromide), which on heating with excess alcoholic potash (KOH) yields ethyne. Ethylene dibromide undergoes successive dehydrohalogenation to give ethyne.
