Finite Verb
• A Finite Verb is verb which changes its form with a change in the subject or tense
For Example :
(1)Rohan play cricket every day.
- The verb 'play' changes its form with the change in the subject or the tense.
Non-Finite Verb
•A Non-Finite Verb does not change its form with a change in the subject or tense.
For Example
(1) I love to play cricket every day
- In above sentence the participle ‘playing 'does not change its form with a change in the subject and tense.
Non-finite Verbs can be :
- (a) Infinitives
- (b) Participles
(Present and Past)
- (c) Gerunds
(a) Infinitives verb
- Infinitive is the 'to -' form of the verb .
- It does not change its form with a change in the subject or tense
For Example
(1) The girls like to walk in the park every day.
(The underlined words in the following sentences is the infinitives)
Present Participles
- The present participle is verb which does the work of a verb as well as that of an adjective.
- Present participles always end in –' ing'.
For Example
- Sunil was sleeping peacefully.
Past Participles
- A past participle is verb which does the work of a verb as well as that of an adjective.
- It always end in
- '- ed' or '- en’.
For Example
- She had forgotten about them
Gerund
- The gerund is a non-finite verb which does the work of a verb as well as that of a noun.
- Gerunds always end in
- ' – ing.
