reflex action is defined as a spontaneous, automatic and mechanical response to a stimuli without the will of an individual...

When a receptor is stimulated, it sends a signal to the central nervous system, where the brain co-ordinates the response.

But sometimes, a very quick response is needed, one that does not need the involvement of the brain

A reflex, or reflex action, is an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus.

A reflex is made possible by neural pathways called reflex arcs which can act on an impulse before that impulse reaches the brain.
