Organisms needed a quick system to respond to sudden stimulus which, if not responded immediately, could damage the organism. Thus they evolved a very efficient way where the time consumed for the stimulus to reach the brain would be lessened and another system closer would respond immediately! That's why when we are startled we get the feeling to either run or attack.

Reflex arc is the mechanism of reflex action or the pathway for the reflex action to act.
Reflexes work faster than thought and it is very essential at emergencies or at sudden accidents.
