Laws of refraction state that: The incident ray, reflected ray and the normal, to the interface of any two given mediums; all lie in the same plane. The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence and sine of the angle of refraction is constant.

Reflection is when light bounces off an object. Light reflects from a smooth surface at the same angle as it hits the surface. For a smooth surface, reflected light rays travel in the same direction. This is called specular reflection. For a rough surface, reflected light rays scatter in all directions.

The laws of reflection are as follows:

  • The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal to the reflection surface at the point of the incidence lie in the same plane.

  • The angle which the incident ray makes with the normal is equal to the angle which the reflected ray makes to the same normal.
