  • in short, refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is given as ₁μ₂ = μ₂/μ₁

Here, refractive index of diamond, μ₂ = 2.42

Refractive index of alcohol, μ₁ = 1.36

∴ Refractive index of diamond with respect to alcohol, ₁μ₂ = μ₂/μ₁

= 2.42/1.36 = 1.779 ≈ 1.8

Therefore the refractive index of diamond with respect to alcohol is 1.8.
