Refractive index of glass is 1.52 and that of ruby is 1.71.

a) In which medium does light move slower?

b) How does the light ray bend (w.r.t normal) when it travel from glass to ruby?

c) What is the refractive index of glass w.r.t ruby?

a) As ruby has greater refractive index than glass therefore , light will move slower in ruby .

b) As compared to glass , ruby is a denser medium therefore , the ray of light will bend towards the normal while traveling from glass to ruby .

c) Refractive index of glass with respect to ruby is :-

refractive index of glass / refractive index of ruby

= 1.52 / 1.71

= 0.889 (approx)

Refractive index = Speed of light in vacuum/ Speed of light in medium

so higher refractive index the slower it travels in that medium.

Ruby has higher refractive index than glass

a) So light moves slower in Ruby.

When light enter a medium of more refractive index it bends towards the normal and vice versa.

b) here light is going from glass to Ruby.

So it will bend towards normal.

c) Glass = 1.52

Ruby = 1.71

Glass/Ruby = 1.52/1..71 = 8/9
