Given:

R.I of water w.r.t air =1.33

R.I of glass w.r.t air=1.5

To find:

  1. R.I of water w.r.t glass
  2. R.I of glass w.r.t water

Solution:

  • Refractive Index (R.I) of a w.r.t b = R.I of a w.r.t air / R.I of b w.r.t air
  • R.I of water w.r.t glass = R.I of water w.r.t air / R.I of glass w.r.t air
  • Substituting given values we get,
  • R.I of water w.r.t. glass = 1.33/1.5 = 0.89
  • Similarly we find that R.I of glass w.r.t water = 1.5/1.33
  • Hence, R.I of glass w.r.t water = 1.124

Answer:

  1. R.I of water w.r.t glass is 0.89
  2. R.I of glass w.r.t water is 1.124

Answer:

Refractive index is the the ratio of the velocity of light in a vacuum to its velocity in a specified medium.

The refractive index of water with respect to air is 1.33. So, the refractive index of air with respect to water will be the reciprocal.

Therefore, refractive index of air with respect to water will be 1/1.33 = 0.75.

Hence, refractive index of air with respect to water will be 0.75.
