The ending of the play "The bishop's candlesticks" would have been more interesting if the convict started living with the bishop instead. Just one act of kindness may not have changed him completely but staying under the supervision of the bishop, the convict could have reformed his life.
Also, if Persome had somehow ended up marrying the convict so he could start a new life, it would've given the story a twist. Maybe she would've had more empathy then and become less materialistic.
