Explanation:  

• The bicycle works on the principle of gears and spikes. On pedaling the gears move and as a result the spikes undergo circular motion.  

• However due to absorption of moisture and surface changes on the surface of the gear the coefficient of friction between the two metallic surface increases.  

• Hence majority of the energy that is supplied during pedaling is lost in overcoming friction.

• So oiling is required to reduce friction and make the bicycle move more efficiently.
