Crossing the river was one major problem during floods in Assam. Once Rowntree tried crossing the river on his horse. But the horse panicked while crossing the floodwaters and, in the confusion, the author fell down from his saddle. He somehow hung on to the tail of the horse, which managed to crossed the river and reach the opposite bank.
Rowntree observed that the narrow single lane roads were equally treacherous, during the rain. Once while driving with his family, the car skid and landed in a paddy field six feet below. They had to push it back with great difficulty to continue their journey.
The author, John Rowntree was a British Forest Officer during the British Raj.

He noted that River Brahmaputra flooded the North Banks during the heavy rains of monsoon.
Once he tried to cross a flooded river on horseback and forced his horse to get down into the river.
But he toppled off into the river and managed to hang on the horse’s tail, which he used for steering the horse to safety, out of the river with much difficulty.
