While he was in Assam, the author Rowntree had a terrible flood experience.

He describes many problems in the North Bank during the rainy season.

The flood was one such big problem.

Once, he was travelling with his family on the North Bank. Before they could safely return the monsoon broke out.

Driving through the roads became extremely dangeorous and most roads were built on banks to exceed normal flood levels.

In addition, these roads were narrow and one-way.

Rowntree and his family had to go on a bumpy ride before they could get back on the road.

The road on which they were on was slippery, so that one skid led to another and eventually slithered over the edge into a paddy field about six feet below the road.

On another instance, he crossed one of the flooded rivers on horseback. It wasn't a simple task.

He persuaded his horse with great difficulty to plunge into water.

But the next moment he slipped over his croup and hung on the tail of the horse.

Later he found out that the tail can be used as a rudder.

Both he and his horse came out of the deadly situation without any injuries and made it to the other side of the Brahmaputra.
