Yes!!! I did once as a student but it was well deserved! It was in a high school Honors English class and every time the teacher would take attendance, he would pronounce my last name wrong and when I would remind him of this, but he refused to pronounce it correctly. What nerve, but I was just a kid in the 70’s who wouldn’t dare start an altercation in class or would I?????

My last name was Weiner, which should be pronounced like Weiss, Weinstein, etc. but he pronounced it like the word for a hot dog which is Wiener.

It got to a point where I could no longer endure the humiliation, everybody laughing and the teacher feeling so happy with himself so one day, I taught him a lesson from the mouth of babes!

I said, “Mr. Brodsky, as an English teacher you should know that when you have two vowels together, the first one does the walking and the second one does the talking”, which means that the first vowel remains silent and the second one is pronounced. I went on to say, “Haven’t you ever gone into a supermarket and passed by the meat counter where the hot dogs are located and saw the word WIENERS in BIG LETTERS????

At that point, the class began to roar with laughter and poor Mr. Brodsky did not feel so big and powerful because he got a taste of his own medicine and you can be sure that he never made the same mistake again while taking attendance and calling out my last name.

The funny thing is that I now teach at the same school. Mr. Brodsky has retired long ago because I am teaching 41 years, but ten years ago, when I arranged for my school to have a 40th Gala to celebrate our school’s anniversary, and Mr. Brodsky attended the big event, where I was the hostess for an event that had over 250 grads, staff and faculty attend, Mr. Brodsky spotted me in all my glory, making speeches and inviting all the former principals up to speak one by one. He very shyly came up to me with his wife, took me aside and said, “Wendy, do remember that day in class when you taught me a lesson in English?”and I said, “Yes, I do Mr. Brodsky!’’ and then, after all those years, (about 37 years after that day in class), Mr Brodsky said, ‘’Wendy, I hope you know how sorry I am” and I truly believe him!
