First, you should note that The functionality of a given monomer molecule is normally the number of functional groups participating in any polymerization reaction.

Again we can as well say that degree of polymerization is the number of monomeric units in a macromolecule as well as polymer.

So the relationship between these two is that monomers having functionality which is greater than two will end up introducing branching into a polymer thus  the degree of polymerization will therefore be dependent on the average functionality
