At a very high level, the difference is this: the Lagrangian is the input to an extremal principle that may be used to solve for time evolution, whereas the Hamiltonian represents the time evolution dynamics directly. This may make the Lagrangian sound less useful than the Hamiltonian when all you want is the time evolution. However, the Lagrangian actually gives more insight into the symmetries of the system.
