Generally, this means that a good adsorbentis very porous. The specific area of an adsorbent is the surface area available for adsorption per gram of the adsorbent. Adsorption reduces the imbalance ofattractive forces which exists at the surface, and hence the surface free energy of a heterogeneous system is formed.
