Bassanio, a young venetian of noble rank, wishes to woo the beautiful and wealthy heiress portia of Belmont. Having squandered his estate, he needs 3,000 ducats to subsidise his expenditures as a suitor. Bassanio approaches his friend antonio, a wealthy merchant of Venice who has previously and repeatedly bailed him out. Antonio agrees, but since he is cash-poor – his ships and merchandise are busy at sea – he promises to cover a bond if Bassanio can find a lender, so Bassanio turns to the Jewish moneylender Shylock and names Antonio as the loan's guarantor.

Antonio and Bassanio are one of the two characters introduced by Shakespeare in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE.
They both are bossom friends it can be said as Antonio , a rich merchant and his initimate  friend Bassanio shared a loving bond of frienship. it is antono's love for bassanio  who is a spendthrift that makes him disregard Bassanio's frivolous habits and sign the fatal bond, even at the risk of his life.Bassanio reciprocates his love for antonio with same ardour. Just after winning Portia ., when he comes to know of the danger to Antonio's life he rushes immediately to Venice. He offers in the court the money he has inherited by marrying Portia to settle Antonio's debt. He even promises to sacrifice his own "flesh, blood, bones and all ".

angshu: their relationship has always been controversial in history. as few critic say that they were in love.
