Individual aims of education focus on the development of an individual by enabling the individual to learn. Social aims of education aim at the development of the society as a whole. A society consists of individuals and it is only when the individuals develop would the society be able to develop and progress.

Relationship between individual and social aim of education

  • The two main goals of education are those that pertain to the individual and the community. Individual goals that are in conflict with one another are important for the growth of individuality. The advancement of society is prioritised by social goals despite individual desires not being satisfied.
  • Both are at odds with one another. In fact, it is not. Both the individual and society must coexist. The person is a product of society, and society advances through the growth of each of its members.
  • The purpose of education is to maximise a person's identity in all of its dimensions, including physical, mental, social, emotional, moral, spiritual, and artistic.
  • Independently, society cannot exist without each individual. Despite the mixture of individuals working together for a common goal, society is nothing and each individual lives and acts within it. On the other hand, society does not exist to satisfy the needs of individuals. Society and human life almost go hand in hand.
  • The social purpose of education takes into account the demands of society on a social level. Education is given with the goal of acquainting newcomers to society with social norms, manners, mores, and other practises.
