The bolt, and its corresponding hole, act as a Fastener, when that hole is threaded or otherwise backed by a corresponding nut.

The bolt and the threaded hole, or the bolt that passes through a hole and is held in place by the nut, are examples of a simple machine based on the wedge or inclined plane.

The threads are defined by the clearance hole, necessary to allow the bolt to pass, and the pitch - which is the number of full threads per inch or mm.

A common bolt is the 1/4 x 20 - a quarter-inch clearance with 20 threads per inch.

In order to use a bolt, you need all of the components to have the same specification, in terms of clearance hole and thread pitch.

Note that the “clearance hole” is actually bigger than the drill size need to allow formation of the threads. So if you were to tap a hole for 1/4x20, you would actually use a #7 drill.
