A positive psychology movement has emerged and continued to grow over the last ten years. Nurtured by Martin Seligman and his colleagues, this movement has focused on the study of optimal functioning and ways of nurturing it (Seligman, 2002). Seligman was elected as president of the American Psychological Association in 1996, and his theme for the year was positive psychology (Seligman, 2006). He and his colleagues challenged psychology (and other mental health disciplines) to counter the field's pervasive focus on psychopathology by conducting basic and applied research on well-being and happiness.
