Plant cells have a cell wall and a large central vacuole. In the mature plant, the central vacuole may occupy 50-90% of the cell interior. It stores amino acids, sugars, water ions, and wastes. The cytoplasm is forced into a very narrow zone between the central vacuole and the plasma membrane. A cell's vacuole can occupy a large proportion of the total volume of the cell, e.g., 90% of the volume of some mature plant cells.
