The public sector made a remarkable contribution by creating a strong industrial base, development of infrastructure and also promoting development of backward areas.

However, public sector continued to monopolise in some areas, that too ineffectively, which could be handled well by the Private sector such as Hotel industry, Telecommunication, Aircrafts, etc

Many Public sector enterprises continued to operate, even after incurring heavy losses, due to difficulty in closing a Government undertaking.
