Our Indian society is known as a multi-religious society, comprising different caste, religions together with diversity of religion. Therefore, all these are the divisive factor in one way or the other and if not managed carefully, it could lead to a threat to the integrity and unity of the nation.
EXPLANATION:
- The religious diversity of India land has created a rich cultural heritage, varying over the periods between murderous atrocities and exemplary tolerance. India society is pluralistic society or a land of religious pluralism with Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Sikhism, and many other religions who have been co-existing and growing shoulder to shoulder in the Indian society from ancient times.
- The existence of religious communalism reveals the damaging side of diversity of religions. Though no Indian religion encourages exclusiveness and violence, in the name of different religions violence frequently erupts in various parts of the nation. We often encounter loss of human life and valuable resources owing to biotic and aggressive clashes amongst the forces of Muslim Communalism, Christian Communalism, and Hindu Communalism.
- However secularism is the solution for religious conflicts. The espousal of secularism incorporates the truisms ‘Equality of all religions’ and ‘Absence of a State religion’. Secularism as a contemporary constitutional principle encompasses 2 fundamental propositions. One, people belonging to various sections and faiths of society are equal in front of the law, government policy, and the Constitution. Two, there can neither be discrimination against anyone based on faith or religion nor is there room for the domination of majoritarian religious aspirations and sentiments or a single religion.
