QUESTION :

Religious and social causes: fears regarding english education.

Chapter : The first war of Independence(1857)

ANSWER :

▪️Christian missionaries had established a number of schools in british India.

▪️ Gradually, the number of government schools also began to grow.

▪️In 1829, the Bengal Government established an English MADRASA, which was a Muslim institution.

▪️Later english classes were introduced in BENARAS SANSKRIT COLLEGE also. This seemed to have been done, on the face of it, by best of intentions.

▪️But shifting of emphasis from oriental learning to western education was well not received by the people, especially the pandits and maulavis.

▪️They saw it as an attempt to discourage Islamic and hindu studies.
